Silk vs. polyester custom ties
Two fabrics, two very different jobs — an honest side-by-side from the people who make both.
The short answer
Choose polyester when the tie is worn every day — school, staff and uniform ties — because it washes, holds its colour in sunlight and costs a fraction of silk in the quantities those programmes buy. Choose silk when the tie is worn for an occasion or given as a gift — weddings, leadership gifts, prize and formal ties — because it drapes better and holds a knot shape polyester cannot match. If you are unsure, ask one question: will this tie be washed regularly?
Side by side
| Silk | Polyester | |
|---|---|---|
| Look | A natural sheen and depth, in twill, satin or repp weaves | Even colour with a crisp, consistent finish |
| Knot and drape | Drapes softly and holds a knot shape polyester cannot match | A firmer, more uniform knot |
| Washing | Spot clean or have it professionally cleaned | Machine washable — ideal for daily wear |
| Colour in daylight | Best kept for indoor and occasional wear | Holds its colour under sunlight |
| Decoration | Woven jacquard crests and stripes, or digitally printed artwork | Woven or printed; holds a printed pattern well |
| Price | Costs more per tie for the same design | Costs a fraction of silk at school and uniform quantities |
| Best for | Weddings, leadership and corporate gifts, prize and formal ties | School ties, staff and uniform ties, large team and giveaway programmes |
Where silk earns its place
Silk is the fabric people register without being able to name. In a woven silk tie the crest or stripe is made by the loom, so it has depth and an edge you can feel; a printed silk tie carries photographic, gradient or highly detailed artwork that weaving cannot reproduce. For a wedding photo, a leadership gift or a formal club tie, silk is usually worth the extra cost.
Where polyester is the practical call
A tie worn five days a week needs to survive the wash and the playground. Polyester does both, keeps its colour under sunlight and costs a fraction of silk at volume — which is why we recommend it for everyday school and club ties, and say so plainly even when a school asks us to quote for silk. From across a classroom or a hotel lobby, nobody will tell the difference.
What matters more than the fabric
Silk or polyester, a tie only hangs straight if it is cut on the true bias, and only recovers its knot overnight if the interlining is the right weight. Every Get Custom Ties tie is cut on the bias, slip stitched and bar tacked, and we state the interlining weight so you can choose a fuller or a softer knot.
The verdict
Pick polyester for school, staff, uniform and large team ties — anything worn and washed every day.
Pick silk for weddings, gifts, leadership, prize and formal ties — anything worn for an occasion.
